De Bortoli is a third-generation Australian family wine producer who has taken the world by storm, with their large portfolio of quintessentially Australian wines. Originally from Italy, the family now has vineyards all around Australia from where they source their grapes, including New South Wales where the Merlot for their 2018 release was grown. It tastes like all the little red berries – raspberries, cherries, cranberries and currants alongside a dash of vanilla from its oak treatment. Sourced from the De Bortoli Vineyards on the bank of the King River. SEASON Good Winter rains and a mild Spring lead provided good growing conditions leading into the harvest. After rain in January, a warm dry vintage followed allowing for the fruit to reach ripeness with a wealth of flavour.
The fruit was selected by the winemaker and picked when both flavour spectrum and tannin structure were developed to obtain the characters we are looking for in this wine. The grapes were cold soaked for 24-48 hours and then fermented over 7 days. Cool temperatures of 22.0-25.0°C maintained to retain fresh fruit.

Meet the maker
The De Bortoli story started 90 years ago with Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli creating a life for themselves as new immigrants to Australia from war-torn Europe.
They acquired land through work and support from friends, and from there began to make small amounts of dry table wine. Initially they were providing drink for fellow immigrants but as time went on Vittorio and Giuseppina’s son Deen and his wife Emeri grew the family and more people came onboard to grow the business.
The De Bortoli reputation of producing premium wine grew fast and started from their iconic dessert wine ‘Noble One’ and continued as they expanded into Yarra Valley.
The fourth generation are now beginning to take the De Bortoli reigns and have the responsibility of upholding the official motto of “Semper ad Majora” – “always striving for better,” and the unofficial one “good food, good wine and good friends.”
